The Archers Word
Target archery - action
Shooting at non moving targets placed varying distances away.
This is the only archery discipline that is allowed in the olympics. The events can take place both outdoors or indoors: Outdoors might involve different distances, Indoors its one set distance to shoot at.
Rules:
Since this discipline involves a lot of archers shooting in lines, there are many rules that need to be respected by all archers:
- Most of the event is lead by whistle blows. One whistle blow means that archers can go on to the line and start shooting. Three whistle blows calls for the collection of arrows. It is however not only the responsability of the whistle holder, but every archer, that in case somebody is still shooting, no one is allowed to move on to the collection of arrows.
Important! The command "Fast" requires all archers to stop the action and return their in hand to their quivers.
- The arrows collected at the target may not be touched until the person counting the scores has done so with all arrows present. Touching any arrow before comes with the consequence of diqualification of the score collected by the arrow.
- Any damage caused to another archers property comes with the cost of replacing it.
- Do not step unto the line if at your side lines an archer is at full draw.

Target and Scoring:
The official Fita target have 10 evenly spaced concentric rings. Depending on which ring area the arrow lands, a score is taken from it. The outest ring has only a value of 1, and each step into an inner ring adds by +1, so that the center has a score of 10.
Any arrow that lands on a line dividing two rings is scored to the ring with the higher score.
Arrows that dont hit any of the rings, so are outside of the circular target, are called a "miss", denoted down with an "M". Its value equals a zero.
Archers collect then their respective scores on a sheet.
Depending on the distance, the Fita target changes in total size:
- 18m distance = 40cm diameter
- 25m distance = 60cm diameter
- 30m to 50m distance = 80cm diameter
- 70m to 90m distance = 122cm diameter
Friendly notes:
- Are you going to your first archery competition? Try not to go alone, but take another more experienced archer with you. It adds up to the fun and is useful to the experience.
